Ice, mist and journal play

Hi Everybody!

Another week has flown by, it's Thursday already,
I need to do some dreaded housew**k,
it's cold and grey outside,
and not much better inside!

I made a cover for the second journal I got as
a present, so now it's all set up
and ready to go. I painted the A4 cover with some
blue/green metallic paint, which changes colour with the light,
and added some soft white in
the middle before stamping into the wet paint
with the swirl and script stamps. I don't need any ink on the stamps,
The wet paint gets picked up and transferred.
The floral part of the design
was made with a paper napkin. When it was dry
I stenciled on the birds and added some
gilding flakes:

I was pleased that the underlying stamping is still visible
through the paper napkin:

This was before the napkin went on:

Then I decided to alter a paper bag to make a pocket inside the
journal. Here it is still on my messy table:

Then I used some new and old stencils to liven it up,
adding some white dots to highlight it:

The front page was quickly painted and then stenciled:

Now I have a journal to fill with dreams.

I am linking to Art Journal Journey, Erika's lovely theme
of 'Tell me a story' and to
and to Stamps and stencils,  swirls, whirls and flourishes,
and to Paint Party Friday, hosted by Eva and Kristin.

And here are some icy and misty photos:

Have a great day, take care,
and thanks a lot for coming by!

  3. Your book cover is beautiful Valerie and I love the misty photos, especially the frozen berries! Calm, cold and sunny here today, thankfully we seem to have missed the wintry weather that some parts have had. xx

  4. What a wonderful new journal cover. It has so much beautiful detail. And making a little bag to put inside is a really smart idea. LOve all those dream words. Gorgeous icy photos too. I know its not the nicest to be out in but they do look cool in photos. Hope things brighten up for you. Hugs-Erika

  8. That's a beautiful new journal cover. I really like how you took us through your process. The added altered paper bag will come in handy for memorabilia, too.

We are expecting an ice storm that could knock power out, since they are predicting up to 1/2 inch of ice. 1/4 inch of ice breaks off small to medium limbs, while 1/2 inch knocks out power lines and large limbs. I'm really dreading this upcoming weekend, and fear your photos of the ice will be much nicer than what we will receive.

  9. Your piece is lovely! A wonderful floral antidote to the gray skies and gloom outside. I know that gray and gloom well -- in fact, today!

And I like the bag pocket -- great idea!

  10. Your journal cover is lovely and the altered paper bag for a pocket.......fantastic idea!
Napkins and tissue paper are my "go to" when doing mixed media.
Looks chilly and gray there, no frost here this morning....too warm. That means there will be more rain on the way later in the day.
    Have a great day!!

  11. The journal cover is tremendous, stamping, colours, birds all in a wonderful swirl.
Lovely to see the misty frost, we've had a tiny flurry of snow not worth the bother.
I do like the metal sculpture but it is difficult to know the size from the angle you took the photo. It looks dramatic and minimalist at the same time.

    1. It's large, it's the decoration on the island in the middle of the traffic roundabout to give you an idea.

brrrrrr! yes, we had that same nasty weather! All of snow is now melted and it is mild outside, actually smelled of Spring yesterday- but not to be fooled, they say February will make us shiver with every snowfall that is to deliver! keep safe & warm hugs,Jackie

Your cover and pocket are wonderful. I can only imagine that they will make it a pleasure to pick up this journal to create in. Is it for writing nighttime dreams, or artful dreams? Maybe both.

Sorry it so cold and grey for you but the photographs are wonderful and I can feel the cold and the mist just looking at them.

  43. I am in total love with the journal cover!!!! I have a couple that I need to do cover for too but waiting on inspiration. Love the icy photos. We are having an ice storm right now and it's super slick out there. I went out two days ago and did all of the shopping and stocked up on batteries, candles and propane canisters for the camping cook stove in case we lose power. The neighbor came over and helped me move firewood next to the basement door so we can heat with the fireplace if necessary. ALways like to be prepared if I can be. Hopefully it won't be as bad as they are saying.

  44. The cover looks great! I bought myself two new journals for the start of the new year, and I usually leave the covers fairly plain, but you've inspired me to customize them! Happy PPF!

  45. Love LOVE your journal cover... when I saw the first photo, the shape made me think you were decorating a serving dish.
I always love looking closely at your photos to see the layers/patterns and textures - this was fabulous!
Lovely wintery photos - although not so lovely if you have to be out and about and its slippery.
Winter arrived here a few days ago but most of our snow gone already.
