The last rose of summer

Hi Everybody!
Here's wishing you a good start in the new week.

The weekend was very mixed - cold and wet with sunny intervals and patches of blue sky in between, but it feels more like autumn than summer.

For 49 Faces and for Kim Dellow's Friday face I made another mixed media A3 face. The face was drawn and painted with pastel chalks and water colours, the roses, leaves and butterflies were stenciled and coloured with India Ink markers. The quote is part of a song from Robert Burns, written in 1794.

This morning the raindrops from the night were sparkling in the sun:

The leaves are turning:

I had a run through the castle:

I saw people, dogs and horses:

One of my fave corners:

And this owl was sitting in a front garden:

Have a great day you all, take care,
and thanks a lot for coming by!

  1. Love your face Valerie. You are really good at making their hair so alive. The roses are great, as is the Robert Burns poetry. I love how it runs along the curve of her face. And love those ruins of the castle. Do you know how old the castle is and who it was built for?

    1. It was started back in the 7th century, and was later enlarged by the Emperor Friedrich I, better known as Barbarossa.

  10. Loved seeing the water through that castle "window". Hope you can paint that one Valerie! And loved that owl - ehheeheh.

Well - I don't want to think about the last rose of summer yet - ours are still blooming here in hot Texas!! Our leaves aren't changing yet either but it was fun to see yours starting the process. Your face is lovely - as always. I can't even imagine coming up with 49 faces!!! You are doing GREAT. j.

  14. Pretty fancy rose. Overnight it turned to Autumn and the temps dropped like stones. Socks and jackets required today. But still some Fall blooming plants in the garden, especially the grasses. Love that archway. xox

  15. Very pretty face and rose, Valerie. It is sad to think that summer is coming to an end, but fall is bringing a new season that promises to be joyfully busy.

  17. Hi Valerie, Oh I love this face with the rose. Just beautiful and one of my favorites. I was just thinking of the last red roses that I saw in my garden. It is coming to an end and went by too fast this year.
Lovely walking pics and change of color. We don't get much of that here in Texas.
    Happy Fall.
    Hugs, cm

  19. I simply KNEW I had missed something, especially since I've been at Sally's for the final push to get her house clean. It isn't going to happen, but at least you can walk through most of it now, except for her living area. But those are MY tales, and I came back to see what I had missed.

Your latest face is gorgeous. I think you're quite ahead of Susi in your 49 faces. I'm really impressed with this latest one, and also really like the rose, too.

Your photos from around the area are great. The dogs, horses, and nature shots all show how cool it has gotten there. We are having 90 F (~32 C) weather this week. Still seems like summer here with temps more like July than September.

That old castle is SO photogenic. There seem to be many photo opportunities as you wander around the ruins.

  22. Playing catch-up today. Yesterday helped my brother install a new drain for the rain gutters in the front yard. It wore me out.

The photos are crisp and beautiful too.
