Red at More Mixed Media

Hi Everybody!

Today we are starting a new challenge at More Mixed Media. As always, our challenges are anything mixed-media goes, and this time with optional red. You have four weeks to enter the challenge, and there are  prizes of digital papers for three winners. I made two different pieces - a tag, which is also meant for Michele's 'hearts' challenge at Tag Tuesday, and a book box with matching book. I got given some of these boxes a couple of years back and this is the second one I have finished up to now.

The tag was collaged from various scraps on a spare piece of embossed card. The flower fairy tag was in my stash. I added a tiny scrap of lace and a vintage German scrap rose. I then sewed it onto matting in red and black and added a few hearts:

I am also linking to Simon Monday Challenge, add some red

The book box was textured with structure paste and then given a coat of paint in blue. I was hoping that more blue would show through the paper napkin, which I affixed with art-potch. I gave the whole box 2 coats of clear varnish to make it more durable:

I made a small notebook from canvas covered with the same paper-napkin and tied it with red and yellow ribbons. I sewed round the edges, and used some red distress ink to colour the edges:

The inside was also covered with the same napkins:

The photos were taken on this day one year ago - I think we are all longing for spring:

Have a great day, take care,
and thanks a lot for coming by!

  2. The tag is amazing Valerie with lots of layers and beautiful sewing.

Wow to the box and book project. The texture you created on the box is so beautiful. Everything matches perfectly and it is such an usual make.

The weather looked lovely last year at this time on your photographs. We have thick fog and thick frost today and nothing like your photographs--I will dream that it will be nicer later today

    Enjoy your day

    Love Chrissie xx

  3. Hi Val, hope you are feeling better each day! Love your red tag and book-box with book, great idea. This is so unusual and very well thought out. The tag is really sweet, and I always love the flower fairies. Wonderful photos - roll on spring! The kids all need to go for check-ups at the dentist this afternoon, that should be fun! Hugs, Sarah

  14. Nice to see the art today Valerie. The tag is great and the book cover is great. Napkins are a fabulous art supply, aren't they? And It is wonderful to look back and see spring. I first thought you were lucky enough to have another early spring, but I think this year is more normal. Which might actually be good in the big scheme. Hope it was a fantastic day. Hugs-Erika

  19. Red is my favorite color, so I reeeeally like the artwork you shared with us today. The first one is my favorite, but not just because of the lovely fairy dressed in red. The flower in the corner looks like a peace rose... which is my favorite rose, too. :)

It's very cool how you can work with napkins to create such delicate-looking pieces of art. Love 'em!

Spring feels like it's already sprung here. It's seventy degrees now, and it's supposed to get close to eighty tomorrow. Since this is still technically winter, it kinda makes me wonder what it's going to feel like this summer...

  20. I grew up on the Flower Fairies, so that first piece warms my heart - she looks lovely in amongst the layers. I really love the book box and matching little album to go inside - those flowers are so uplifting. So are your photos, full of sunshine and the promise of spring.

  24. Your mixed media tag and box are phenomenal. I was incredibly impressed. I love the sewing on the tag and the embossed paper looked like it was handmade. Such great attention to detail.

I think we in the states wish we had views like your photos from last year at this time. Right now, it is sleeting and there is a solid sheet of ice on everything. Sorry I'm so late visiting. Seems to be the story of my life lately.
