The colours of autumn

Hi Everybody!

It's another grey and stormy autumn day here, but we have been promised better weather soon, so let's hope they're right. I had the wind in my back today so was able to walk much quicker than usual!

Today I am sharing an A3 17" x 12") mixed media autumnal piece. I started it in art class, and did the fussy-cutting and sewing bits later at home. I painted the background (A3) and 2 smaller pieces (A4) with various colours which I repeatedly sprinkled with embossing powders which were heated and bubbled in several layers to give maximum texture, using the same technique as in the tag I showed in my last post. I added some gilding flakes, too.  The large sheet was used for the BG, and from the smaller ones I cut the leaves and the bird, using a home made stencil for the bird-form. I still have some of the paper over which I will be able to use for die-cuts. I glued all of the cuts to black paper from an old calendar before fussy-cutting again and then sewing round the bird and through each leaf. I added a few dried flowers and gave the bird a berry in its beak. This is how I see autumn .

I am linking to Simon Monday ChallengeAutumn and to Paint Party Friday

The photos were taken by Nathalie at a straw festival which she visited with some friends in the Black Forest area 2 weeks back:

Have a great day, take care,
and thanks a lot for coming by!

  6. The tag is gorgeous. The bird reminds me of the crow pictures you take. Looks like everyone is having a good time at the straw festival. The straw sculptures are incredible. The gent in the outhouse made me laugh. My favorite was the clock. Hope the sun comes out so you can enjoy your walk.

  9. Hmmm, I can't help but wonder if you had the wind at your back when you were going or coming. I think I would've walked into the wind to start out with, just so it could provide me with a little boost on the way back home after a nice long walk.

Your artwork is gorgeous! So much depth in it! It's obvious how much work you put into it.

I've never heard of a straw festival before, but now that I see what it is, I know I'd enjoy it. Very clever and whimsical creations. The man in the little house made me chuckle a little bit, because it looks like he's sitting in an outhouse. Since his pants aren't pulled down, though, I must be mistaken. :)

    Have a wonderful weekend!

We have had a lot of wind and rain here in the UK today and the weekend doesn't look too promising … we shall see.

    Take care.

  16. Well done with the artwork. Very graphic piece. The straw festival has connotations of an old country fair. I am sure you had a great time there.

  21. That autumn page is amazing. I love the gold and the texture of the paint. Funny how autumn is the season that metallics work so well in. And Nathalie's photos of the straw festival are fascinating. They've created some cool pieces. I have heard of scarecrows stuffed with straw but never a straw festival. Have a super weekend Valerie. hugs-Erika

We stayed close to a village of scarcrows when we were on holiday. My favourite was The Queen thumbing a lift to Windsor lol. Have a wonderfull weekend, Sue xx

  27. I apologize for being so far behind in my visit. I'm in catch-up mode and may never catch up. Your sewing is phenomenal. You must have a lot of great control to "trace" around that bird. It's a beauty. The entire entry is amazing. I like to work big, but you did an amazing job, especially since you were sewing everything on your machine.

Wow, Nathalie took some amazing photos of the Straw Festival. I would enjoy something like that, since it really signals autumn.

  28. It's wet and miserable here in the UK too, but my mother in south-west Bohemia has got blue skies, sunshine and 22 degrees... so maybe that's what is headed your way! Looks like Nathalie had that kind of weather for the straw show - just as well... I shouldn't think straw sculptures do very well in heavy rain!

I love your page, the rich glowing colours of autumn, and those fabulous textures from the powders, and the whole composition has great energy and dynamism.
