Hi Everybody!
Hope you have all enjoyed your weekend!
For this piece I used a print of Klimt's beautiful golden lady - Adele Bloch-Bauer. I placed her on a painted and textured A3 background and surrounded her with a mosaic of little squares cut from scrap paper and lots of gilding flakes. The Nazis stole the painting and all other valuables when the family was driven out of their home, and later the painting came into the art museum in Vienna. For many years they refused to hand the painting back to the family, until the owner took them to court, and after a 7 year legal battle they were forced to return it to Maria Altman, who was the legal heir. It now hangs in the Neue Gallery in New York:

Happy early T day Valerie. I love this journal page today. I have read both the book and saw the movie( the Women in Gold) about this painting and Adele Bloch-Bauer. Her story is now a part of history, and I am glad the family was able to get back this painting. So many things were lost when the Nazi's came to power, and as you know, not just art. Happy early T day too. I hope soon we can all go out as more vaccines, I hope you have a wonderful start to the new week. Hugs-Erika

DeleteMorning Valerie, isn't that a grand story how happy are we that she was rediscovered (like many others) and handed back to her rightful owner and is now available for us all to enjoy.. i'd have fought for her too. Finders is NOT Keepers!!

DeleteKlimt is one of my favorite artists and Women in Gold was a good film. Although it didn't get rave reviews, Helen Mirren did a fabulous job as Altman. That painting stirred up a lot of feelings in many people and the book was well worth reading, too. It's a gorgeous entry for Tracey's theme at Art Journal Journey.

DeleteYou know, Valerie, it was bad enough that the Nazis plundered museums and galleries and stole the art, but it was in some respects even more reprehensible and distressing that other galleries, and indeed some private citizens, knowing full well that they were in possession of stolen goods, refused to return them. Often the rightful owners had neither the money nor the energy to pursue their rightful claims. In any event Klimt's incredible work provided great inspiration for you. The pictures of the streets and coffee shops in pre COVID times seem so bright and cheerful, dare I say normal? One day soon we will hopefully get back to all of that and be able to meander at will and drop into a café for elevenses. Maybe even by summer or fall this year. The misty photographs convey a certain ambiance, but as you say a bright, colourful sunrise is preferable. Another week at the clinic begins. I hope the progress you are making will continue, and accelerate even. Hugs and kisses, David
ReplyDeleteThanks David. As you say, there are still countless treasures which were not returned to their owners, and many people never able to reclaim them. But I'm always happy when I hear that some people still have success. Those who still harbour stolen art-works etc are thieves, however high or low they may be. I am still hoping that sooner or later there will be normal times when we can go out for a coffee or a meal again. The week at the clinic has begun well, I hope your week did, too. DeleteThe golden lady print looks fabulous surrounded by the gilding flakes and that's a good sentiment for this piece. I watched the film a couple of years ago and enjoyed it.

ReplyDeleteYour sun rises are spectacular! And no, I don't share your love of misty mornings. We often get morning mist in the valley, but as we live high up, we often look down on it. Very strange. Sometimes we can see the mist literally rolling in. I stand at the window and watch it. It only takes minutes...
It's nice to look at those photos from the cafe's and remember the good times when you could just go out and have a cuppa coffee. Lets hope those times will come back.

ReplyDeleteIt's hard to believe a museum would _know_ the work hanging in their gallery had been stolen and _still_ refuse to return it. I'm glad the family had the resources to pursue the case.

Staying home hasn't been much of a sacrifice for me as I'm such a homebody, but I do miss going out to eat at a restaurant. Hopefully, now that there is a vaccine, by next Summer things may be back to normal. Your sky photos are always amazing. Happy T Day
