Today I have a piece I made during the Lifebook taster sessions. I'm sorry, I've forgotten which teacher this was from. It's about the legend of the Selkies. Selkies are creatures who are half human and half seal. When they are on land they are completely human, when in the water they are just seals. They are supposed to be able to sing so beautifully that they can lure mortals to them. So be careful if your by the sea and hear a strange and hauntingly beautiful melody!

Your beautiful lady painting reminds me of an Avatar, loved that movie, but seem to be lone in that and love the abstract, great colours..Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe..

ReplyDeleteI have made the acquaintance of many humans, Valerie, and I have spent many happy hours observing seals, but I have never heard of a Selkie. I wonder if selkies take selfies? From now on, every time I see a seal I will be wondering if it a genuine pinniped or a human in its guise as a Selkie. Ah, the mysteries of life. I like your scribble very much, and I prefer scribble to abstract in this case. A good scribble is probably therapeutic for all of us, adult or child. Maybe even a Selkie would like to scribble. I shall perhaps go out and buy some markers or felt tip pens, of which I have none, so that I can scribble once in a while. Others might call it acting out a tantrum! Enjoy the weekend. DeleteI've never seen a Selkie but if I did I am sure it would look exactly like your beautiful lady. I can well imagine her luring men folk to the rocks. Love how you have combined the two (seal and female to make her and then used seaweed to frame and compliment her hair.

DeleteI didn't get to see any of the taster series this fall, so I can't help you. That Selkie was really different, but I enjoyed learning about it. The other art is something I would ave really LOVED. I wish I had been able to see that one. I am truly into abstract.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid I read a book about a selkie who falls in love with a man, but still feels that she belongs in the sea - it was so sad! I had fun with the abstract, I will paint more, it's pure fun! Hugs!

DeleteI was so drawn to your beautiful painting that I skipped right past your introduction. I knew immediately that she was a selkie, and what a compelling image! My ancestors come from the outer Scottish island and northeaster Ireland, so selkies really speak to me. I even have selkie in my blog address. I slid your painting onto my desktop, so I can enjoy it longer!
